While this beautiful Earth provides us food, water, air and all other requirements, the Sun provides us the necessary energy in the form of heat and light. That is why Indians respect them with a sense of gratitude and call Earth as Mother and Sun as Father. But thanks to the modern civilization the Earth is not only in bad shape, its people are facing a perilous situation that is unfortunately not even being realized them. Various pollutions of air, water, land besides radioactivity, electromagnetism, sound, light, visual and others are acquiring dangerous proportions threatening the very life on the planet. Even if they are realizing, sadly, the people are not willing to change their lifestyle and governments are blatantly continuing their money spinning development programs.
The reason for the present crisis in India (as in other countries) is the shedding of the great Indian culture and aping the West. The result is that we landed in to various life threatening pollutions. Every ritual, custom and festival in ancient India was based on super scientific, holistic and above all eco-friendly practice. This wisdom was faithfully passed on from generation to generation over the millennia. Even scholars from developed countries have a great regard for the brilliant Vedic wisdom of India and trying to research into the ancient Indian sciences and practices, but it is the educated local ‘elite' who condemn the ancient Indian culture as superstitious.
According to the ancient Indian sciences and philosophy, the entire universe including both animate as well as inanimate objects is made up of Pancha Bhutas, namely earth (clay), water, fire, air and space ( akaash ). The saying Yada pinde tada brahmande means that the internal body and the external universe are similar. An imbalance in the Pancha Bhutas is the root cause of all that is going in the world. The internal Pancha Bhutas of the Human are bombarded by numerous man made toxins introduced through the modern lifestyle, leading to the disease of body and mind. Our physical health depends on the inputs like air, water and food and of course exercises to the body. Just as to rebuild a collapsed wall one needs the same material the wall was made off, diseased Human can be brought back to health by administering only the Pancha Bhutas.
In the case of a complex, multi-cellular organism as a human being, akash corresponds to spaces within the body, vayu denotes the movement agni controls the functioning of the enzymes jal is in all body fluids and prithvi manifests itself in the solid structure of the body. The Thridoshas or three defects in Ayurvedic practice, vata, pitta, and kapha have particular qualities or attributes which characterize their effects on the human body. People remain healthy as long as the doshas are in a state of balance or equilibrium within the body. The body has the capacity to overcome minor disturbances in the equilibrium of the doshas, but if the equilibrium is disturbed too greatly, the body then succumbs to disease and decay. Though everyone's body contains all three doshas, generally, one or two of the doshas will predominate in an individual, leading to the categorization of people as different Ayurvedic body types, for example, Vata-Pitta, Kapha, or Pitta-Kapha, etc. People are also characterized by their qualities into three types or Trigunas. Just as the doshas are the essential components of the body, the three gunas - Satwa , Rajas and Tamas - are the three energy types of the mind. Essentially Sattva is knowledge based, Rajas is desire based and Tamas is inertia based.
Vata is mainly due to imbalance in air and space elements. Vata has a dislike for cold climate , dry skin and hair, quick to pick up and learn and forget information etc. A vata subject is advised to keep warm, avoid cold and frozen foods, and take good rest. Pitta is mainly due to imbalance in Fire and water elements. Pitta subject has flushed skin, profuse perspiration, bad breadth and body odour, sharp in mind etc. He is advised to cut down salt and spices, eat cool foods. Kapha is mainly due to imbalance in water and earth elements. Kapha subject is obese, heavy, steady, has soft skin and hair, slow movements. He should get plenty of exercise, avoid fatty foods etc.
In fact the pollution in the world is directly related the pollution in the minds of the people. Only a polluted mind can do such damage to the Nature on which his very survival is dependent. So if we want fight the pollution outside, we have to first fight the pollution inside our minds. The environmental degradation all over the planet earth due to human activity, particularly of three of the Panch Bhutas namely air, water and land (fire and space being immune) is resulting in global warming and climate change, with disastrous consequences like floods, draughts, hurricanes, epidemics etc.
The tiny amount of carbon dioxide resident in the atmosphere at any time is extremely important to keep the Earth from freezing but excess of it along with other greenhouse gases creates over heating of the Planet. Temperature increase in glacial regions is a precursor for the rest of the earth. A UN report on global warming based on the findings of 2,500 scientists says, that more than one billion people may face a shortage of fresh water by 2050, and that millions will be threatened by floods as sea levels rise by the 2080s. Himalayan glaciers which feed into seven of Asia's great rivers sustain hundreds of millions of people in the Indian subcontinent and China with water for drinking, irrigation and industry. And they are melting and retreating at a rate of 10-15m/year leading to a reduction of their area from the present from 500,000 sq km . to 100,000 sq km by the 2030s. The rapid melting of Himalayan glaciers will reportedly first increase the volume of water in rivers, causing widespread flooding, followed by draughts damaging agriculture and livestock.
The Indian Nobel Laureate and Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) Rajendra Kumar Pachauri says that in the 21st century sea-level rise will be anywhere between 18 to 59 centimetres, even with out taking in to the collapse of Greenland and the Antarctica ice-sheet. A rise in sea level by 0.4 meters to 1.4 meters in the coming years will spell doom for several communities and several habitations on this planet including countries like Mauritius and Bangla Desh, sparking a mass migration into India . Due to global warming the poorest people and the poorest nations are likely to suffer most.
While high technology solutions will not solve the problem they only aggravate it. Opinion is undivided among the intellectuals that unless the world learns to live a Pro-Nature eco-friendly life, it is impossible to stop the global warming. It remains to be seen whether humanity will opt for soft options or hard options. It is hear that India , backed by the brilliant Vedic wisdom, can lead the world to safer shores. May it happen - Tathaasthu |

GLIMPSES OF VEDIC MICROBIOLOGY
Dr T.S.Ramakrishna
Founder and Secretary ESWARA |
 |
Mounting problems of human environment and human values are making life more complex and more miserable, leading to a revival of the timeless knowledge of Vedas. Of late, the dedicated work of individuals and organizations in Vedic Sciences is coming into a better focus of the society. The numerous microbiological phenomena surrounding life on earth were well understood by the sages who discussed them in various books on agriculture, environment and health of humans as well as that of flora and fauna. Unfortunately in several branches of science including microbiology, discoveries made by ancient Indians centuries ago are wrongly ascribed to western scientists of recent times. “ Gurus of Vedic Microbiology” and “Revised History of Microbiology (Vedic to Modern)” by Chakradhar Frend et al (2007) of the Rishi Kanva Vedic Microbiological Research Institute, are some interesting recent additions. Health
According to Ayurveda Agni (Ojas), one of the Pancha Bhootas is a prime factor in life. Its presence is life and absence is death. The entire defense mechanism of the body – thermal, chemical, hormonal, metabolic and tissue changes are controlled by Agni (Sriramulu, 2007) which is a form of energy. We can also visualize each individual to carry a biomagnetic field of his own. The constant interaction between the bioenergies among individuals under the overall influence of cosmic energy explains many phenomena which are not understood by the modern scientist. In an interesting book titled “The Biology of Belief” Bruce Lipton, the author says “thoughts are more powerful and can bring changes in genes or DNA”. This proves the power of positive thinking, which is not new to ancient Indian philosophy.
Indians also believe that a food or medicine prepared by violent means affect the consumer! Only Indians know about the Sattvik, Rajasik and Tamasik foods and their characteristic effects on humans as reflected in the sloka:
Aaharastvapi sarvasya trividhobhavati priyaha
Ygjnasthapa sthatha daanam tesham bheda mimam srunu (Gita 17-7)
The process of fermentation was also mentioned in Rig Veda (1.191.10). Kautilya cites about six kinds of alcoholic drinks in his famous work ‘Artha Shastra' in the chapter Suradadyaksha (2.25). Charaka mentions about 14 types of Suras (Pankaj Goyal, 2007). We are also aware of the importance of cow's urine as a great medicine as this sloka shows:
Gavyam samadhuram kinchidoshagnam krimikusthanutkandoom cha samayet pittam samyagdoshodare hitam (Chandogyopanishad 1-10)
which means “the cow's urine is sweetish, it alleviates tumors, is bactericidal, cures leprosy. If drunk will purify the body and is good for the abdomen”. The US patent and Trade office has granted patent for the Indian innovation, which has proved that cow's urine can make antibiotics, anti-fungal agents and also anti-cancer drugs more effective. This work was done by CSIR's Centre for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Lucknow in collaboration with Gau Vigyana Anusandan Kendra, Nagpur Agriculture
It is a pity that centuries old practices of organic farming in India based on the principle of “ Jivasya jiva bhojanam ” (Vyas, 2007) are replaced by chemical farming for short term gains in pursuit of “Green Revolution”, leaving behind a sickly soil and subsurface and a host of allergies, digestive ailments, cancer, physical and mental deformities, and weakened immunity among people. Is it not a paradox that the developed countries are now advocating organic farming? Should not our national laboratories and universities since independence have concentrated on improving the organic methods of cultivation? Now another hollow slogan “Evergreen Revolution” is coined. Is it possible if we do not resort to Vedic practices of agriculture with the spirit: Annat bhavanti bhootani parjanyat annasambhavahYgjnat bhavati parjanyo yagjnah karma samudbhavah (Gita 3-14) Lunar radiation
The magical effects Lunar radiation on life on earth are not given much importance in modern science although some random studies of correlation are made in the West relating to menstruation, criminal behavior, accidents and hospitalization (Michal Zimecki, 2006)
The ancient Indians d ecidedly knew a lot about the amazing effects of moon on all living organisms on earth, including humans, plants and animals. Moon is considered one of the visible forms of God Himself. Moon is called “Oushadhipati” the father of medicines. It is interesting to note that Soma Lata a rare creeper is believed to sprout one leaf every day from new moon to full moon and shed away one leaf from full moon to new moon! Lord Krishna says in Gita
Gaamavisya cha bhootani dharayamyaham ojasaPushnami cha oushadeehi sarvaaha somo bhootva rasaatmakaha (Gita 15-13) which means “It is I who support all creatures, with my vital power permeating the soil. Becoming the nectar of the moon, I nourish all herbs and medicinal plants”.
Even in developed countries there are people who believe in the magic of moonlight. Richard Chapin of Arizona in the USA, who is no scientist, has reportedly spent four years and about a crore of rupees to set up a roughly 50' x 50' moonlight reflector containing an array of mirrors i n Arizona's Sonoran desert. People who are sick and depressed come to bathe in the ‘gentle blue-white beam' of Chapin's moonlight collector, which is also hoped to cure arthritis and some cancers
. Environment
The importance of Yagjna in creating a safe and better environment for people cannot be exaggerated. Soon after the leakage of mthylisocynite gas from a factory, which killed thousands and maimed hundreds of thousands, one Mr. Kushwala a resident and teacher in Bhopal in India, started performing his usual Agnihotra and in just 20 minutes, symptoms of gas poisoning were gone from his home. This Agnihotra is nothing but a miniature version of the Vedic Homa performed to keep the environment from harmful microorganisms. Unfortunately grotesque perversions have crept into rituals and various practices, of ancient India , like Ganesh immersions involving massive iron frames tons of Plaster of Paris, paints, chemical etc. The Future
Consciousness' is now being termed as a new dimension in science. We have recognized that the whole world comprising the animate and inanimate objects is full of
consciousness although of different levels. Microbial intelligence observed in the vast array of microbes is attributed to a lower form of consciousness (Chakradhar Frend, 2007). The art or science of psychometry deals with communicating with inanimate objects.
India with its tremendous Vedic knowledge can be a pioneer in the research of many microbilogical phenomena unknown to the modern world and discarded as superstition. The International Vedic Microbiology Seminar (August 20-21, 2007) organized by the Indian Foundation for Vedic Science founded by Ravi Prakash Arya, is a pioneering effort in highlighting various microbiological phenomena, issues and solutions relating to human, animal and plant life on earth. Research in Vedic microbiology should be undertaken by all National laboratories and Universities for a better dissemination of the Vedic wisdom which is qualitatively the ultimate. To day the world needs, particularly rural areas and developing countries, countless centers of Yoga, Naturopathy and Ayurveda more than super specialty hospitals.
At the end one should not get an impression that reverting to Vedic Sciences is very easy. Present day Vedic scholars may often be found to be unsure, ambiguous, evasive etc due to the fact that Vedic Sciences suffered serious neglect during a thousand years of foreign invasion and three hundred years of industrial revolution. We have to make best use of modern science and technology in understanding the super scientific concepts of Vedic Science to come out with solutions for the nagging problems of the present day society. This will definitely make India a world leader in science. |

Turmeric - The Magic Ingredient Of The Indian Kitchen
Dr.Kamala Krishnaswamy,
Former Director, National Institute of Nutrition,
President, Nutrition Society of India |
 |
| Mounting health care costs and the consumer desire to maintain health and quality of life have focused the biomedical researchers and public health scientists' attention on diet and disease prevention. Asians in general use more spices and the fame of Indian spices is perhaps older than the recorded history. India is recognized all over the world as “Home of spices”.
The story of Indian spices dates back to over 7000 years into the past and spice box is an intrinsic part of the Indian kitchen. Turmeric, a common spice known in Asia as the poor man's saffron is currently the focus of attention of biomedical scientists for its pleiotropic actions for several diseases of chronic nature. From time immemorial, turmeric has its place in Indian systems of medicine as well as in Indian cuisine. The root and rhizome (underground stem) are used as medicaments. Further, several unique properties make it an ideal choice as a food flavor, colorant, preservative and a cosmetic. Oleoresins extracted from turmeric are in great demand by the food and pharmaceutical industries abroad.
Spices used as food adjuncts enhance the quality of food. They exhibit a wide range of physiological and pharmacological properties due to their bioactive phytonutrients. Current literature accords great importance to the long history of human use, as they are likely to yield novel drug prototypes for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular (heart attack) and cerebrovascular (stroke), neurodegenerative problems (Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis), cancer, inflammatory problems such as arthritis, cataract and toxicity due to drugs and toxins. Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine from India , has eulogized spices as wonder foods. In this connection turmeric and its active principles - curcuminoids have received considerable attention among biomedical scientists, medical profession, pharmacologists, food scientists and nutritionists all over the world. Literature is replete with mounting evidences that agents such as turmeric or its constituents curcuminoids, promote health and prevent diseases. It exhibits several molecular targets and is similar to many other phenolic compounds found in other spices, fruits, vegetables and beverages such as tea and wine.
Traditionally turmeric has been used as a food preservative as it protects and preserves foods against spoilage and infestations. It masks off flavor and protects against decomposition and bacterial spoilage. These traditional practices are now supported by new scientific evidence and apparently the constituents which protect the plant and food also protect several biomolecules of the body preventing degenerative disorders which result in chronic diseases. Turmeric therefore has kaleidoscopic properties and uses.
Traditionally turmeric has been used as a general tonic, for skin ailments, wound healing, gastrointestinal and respiratory disorders, as anti-infective and for arthritis and several viral disorders. As on date we have evidence that it is a potent anti-inflammatory-anti-oxidant with anti-atherosclerotic and anti-cancer effects. Curcumin promotes wound healing and tissue repair. It controls over reactive inflammatory reactions and improves inflammatory bowel disorder, peptic ulcer and gall stones. Turmeric/Curcumin/derivatives impact blood lipid and platelet aggregation. The emerging scenario suggests that curcumin due to its multiple effects such as arrest of cell cycle, inhibition of signal transduction cascade and transcription factors, growth response gene and growth factors and oncogenes control cancer and metastasis. In keeping with its anticancer effects, it reduces, inhibits or delays tumors in skin, oral cavity, forestomach, duodenum, stomach, colon, breast, prostate, blood cancer (leukemia), liver, lung and ovary. Thus curcumin is a potent chemo preventing and possibly a treating agent as it targets several mechanisms of cancer.
Curcumin has been shown to offer protection against ischemic injury to heart, chronic inflammatory lung diseases, radiation damage, hyaline membrane disease in pre-term infants, pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, toxicity due to pesticides and aflatoxin, renal injury due to drugs and toxins, scleroderma, hepatotoxicity and fibrosis. It even counteracts muscle injury and stress responses. Oxidative damage to lenses resulting in cataract is ameliorated. Diabetes and its complications are also reduced. The various effects of curcumin are mainly due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative and antifibrotic effects It has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral (AIDS & HPV) activity However most of the studies are either in vitro or in vivo in animals.
Thus its use in traditional practice for many ailments is based on scientific logic. Curcumin/turmeric are relatively safe and gram quantities have been used for clinical trials and as part of diet regularly. It has been used for arthritis, post surgical wounds, gall stones, pre-cancer and cancers and peptic ulcer in clinical trials.
Turmeric has a plethora of beneficial biological functions and thus appears to be a versatile spice, which is a natural way to health-a spice of life indeed and a key to chronic diseases prevention through a wide sweep of molecular actions. While more vigorous clinical trials are required, it can be used as an add on or adjuvant therapy for all chronic diseases and degenerative disorders or as food based approach at least in cultures where it has been a part of everyday cuisine as in India, Indonesia, China, Malaysia etc.
There are many other spices of medicinal value used in the Indian kitchens from times immemorial. The food based approaches with selected medicinal botanical or neutraceuticals or dietary supplements may favorably influence the pathogenesis of chronic disorders. Man is what he eats and therefore not only nature and nurture but also nutrition is an important lifestyle modification to live a healthy, happy and productive life. |

Ancient Indian Concepts of Personal Health, Public Health And Planet Health
Dr T.S.Ramakrishna
Founder and Secretary ESWARA |
 |
The wisdom of Vedas and Vedic culture have percolated from generation to generation into the life and blood of average Indian, since times immemorial. Faith driven by super scientific concepts and not superstitions, has guided the lives of the people through millennia. However, foreign invasions during the last thousand years and industrial revolution through the last three hundred years have completely metamorphosed lives of the Indians that to day there is very little of that great ancient Indian wisdom left in people's lifestyle, food and culture.
While earth, from which we are born and into which we vanish, is revered as the mother, the Sun who is the source of energy and with out whom life is impossible on this planet, is considered as the father. A complex set of disciplined actions based on shastras that provide happiness and prosperity to all living organisms including people, flora and fauna on earth is defined as Dharma , the code of a conduct.
Considering the extreme sophistication and complexity the ancient Indians equated the awesome human body to a temple. Regarding health, they believed more in prevention of disease than cure. Health is essentially of two fold nature, one is physical health and the other is mental health, both of which are inter-related. While physical health is sense related and is dependent on the quality of air, water and food that are fed to the body, mental health depends on various thoughts that are fed to the mind.
Breath is life or Prana and systematic breathing is called Pranayama, which can make a phenomenal difference to a man's health . Man, when provoked, angry or excited breathes faster compared to a cool and calm person who breathes rather slowly, which increases the longevity. Drinking eight handfuls of water per day is supposed free a person from vata, pitta and kapha (the three principal disorders in health according to Ayurveda) and enables him to live for 100 years. Untimely, deficient or excess food is considered equal to poison. The type of food to be taken should be commensurate with the nature of one's work.
Gita describes the good and bad effects of various foods, Sattvik, Rajasik and Tamasik types. While Sattvik foods promote longevity, intelligence, vigor, wealth, happiness and cheerfulness, Rajasik foods cause suffering, grief and sickness and Tamasik foods cause error and inertia. Thus interestingly even the thoughts that are generated in the mind also have a bearing on the food we eat. Much can also be learnt from sage Patanjali's yoga sutras about mental health, the enormous powers of the mind including the adverse effects due to negative emotions.
In the past Public Health was nothing more than the sanitary inspector spraying some bleaching powder on the roadsides, chlorinating the drinking water and controlling the spread of cholera etc. Modern civilization is creating tremendous amounts of toxic wastes, leading to complex public health problems and the cumulative effect of thousands of urban centers of the world is threatening the earth as a whole. Air, water and earth, three of the five basic building materials or Pancha Bhutas of life on earth are under serious attack in the name of development. Such vandalism is never permitted in Vedic culture, according to which, drawing the resources from the earth should be done as painlessly as we draw milk from a cow. “Oh mother Earth, when we dig you and put a plant please allow it grow well. In the process may we not trespass or hurt you” - such is the humility and respect towards Mother Earth. The man's quest has always been for peace as evidenced in the prayer : “Let there be peace on earth, peace in the space, peace in the skies, peace with medicinal herbs, peace with flora, peace in the universe, peace with all gods, peace, peace and peace everywhere ”!!!. And that is possible only if simple and natural living becomes mandatory for every body in place of the present day greed. Needless to say that the lead should come from the intellectual and the scientist.
But while it is near impossible to stop the so called development and consequent environmental degradation in the world due to the very high stakes involved, only India backed by the unique Vedic culture, has the necessary wisdom to provide the right direction and enlightenment to the world and save it from an impending disaster. |

PARA TATTVA GANITA DARSANAM
Gurajada Suryanarayana Murty
(PRINCIPLES OF TRANSCENDENTAL PHILOSOPHY OF MATHEMATICAL TRUTH)
|
 |
Human civilization may be considered to have been built up on three pillars- science, philosophy and religion (or spirituality). A philosopher would consider these three disciplines as vector forces directed towards the same goal, which is the welfare of humanity.
This lecture is an attempt to bring out clearly the intimate link existing between mathematical and metaphysical truths .The chief motivation for this study came from the Sanskrit aphorisms and commentary in a book called Purnamimamsadarsanam ? written by Sri Jagadguru Kalyanananda Bharati. Among these aphorisms, there are two that actually formed the foundation on which the whole edifice of the author's book PARA TATTVA GANITA DARSANAM stands. These two aphorisms are:
1. Pada Beeja Samkhya Rekhanam Uttarotttaram Baliyah 2. Vruttameeswarah
The first of these two aphorisms discloses a universal principle of profound significance. It states that there are four means of grasping metaphysical truths: Word ( PADA ), Mystical letter ( BEEJA ), Number ( SAMKHYA )?? and Line ( REKHA ) and that each succeeding one is superior to the former. Therefore, of these four means, the one that depends on Line (Geometry) is the best.
The second of the above two aphorisms states that VRUTTAM - a Circle represents ESWARA - translated as Godhead. Normally, the word VRUTTAM denotes the figure that we know as a Circle, which for ordinary purposes of study is the same as any other geometrical object. How does a Circle become qualified to represent God? Sri Jagadguru?? Kalyanananda Bharati gave cogent arguments based on Upanishads to justify the statement that Circle ?represents ESWARA. Before we understand this statement, we must stress on a special feature of a Circle. And that is “a Circle represents roots of unity”. Further we are taught that v1, the square root of 1, has two values, 1 and also ?1. Why should we accept both positive one and negative one as correct answers? Answers to both these questions are given through the 108 aphorisms in Paratattva Ganita Darshanam .
On the basis of mathematical truths, we can ponder on the metaphysical implication of the second aphorism, namely, VRUTTAMEESWARAH . If any small part of
a circle is equal to the whole circle, is it not true that every part of ESWARA ?? is indeed ESWARA ? ? In fact the message of ADVAITA VEDANTA is precisely this truth, namely BRAHMAN ? is indivisible ( AKHANDAM ). The path to comprehend the answers to these questions is in the domain of complex numbers, familiar to mathematicians, which are nothing but points on circle of radius 1.
Thus, Purnamimamsadarsanam has enlarged the meaning of circle and thereby established a new way to negotiate through the complex concepts of JIVA, ESWARA, AVIDYA ? and MITHYA, and finally to comprehend the philosophy of VEDANTA . In Para Tattva Ganita Darshanam , the subject is presented in the form of a dialogue between two imaginary characters – a Mathematician and a Vedantin.
In the lecture some examples like SRI CHAKRAM are also discussed as to how geometrical imagery is used for metaphysical meditations by the students of spiritual pursuits. |

The ‘Scientific' Aspects of Ganita,
Hora And Samhita Divisions of Jyotisha Sastra
Vidya Vachaspati, Joutish Sarvabhouma
Sri C. B. V. Subrahmnya Sastry |
 |
Jyoti is light and Jyotisha Shastra is the science of light emitting (both self luminescent and reflected) heavenly bodies. Ancient Indian Astrology recognizes nine celestial bodies called ‘Grihas' (loosely translated as planets) that include Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn besides two imaginary intersection points in the celestial sphere called Rahu and Ketu. This is in contrast to modern astronomy, according to which there are nine planets in the Solar system out of which only Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are common in both systems. It may be noted that recently Pluto is removed from the list of nine planets. While astronomy is the science of the heavenly bodies, Astrology is originally understood as practical astronomy but is now almost confined to the once supposed art or science of the influence of the heavenly bodies on human and terrestrial affairs.
Jyotisha shastra cannot be understood by people who do not believe in God, re-birth, and law of karma. In addition, according to Ancient Indian philosophy, every body is supposed to follow the path of righteousness (Dharma) to acquire money (Ardha) to fulfill his just desires ( Kama ) and liberate (Moksha) himself. These are called the four Purushardhas or goals of man. The course of life a man is believed to be directly controlled by the law of his Karma and indirectly reflected in the positions of various Grihas.
Jyotisha Shastra is mainly meant for guiding people in choosing the most suitable time for undertaking various scriptural practices. Jyotisha Shastra cannot be understood by people who do not believe in god, re-birth, and law of karma. Ganitha, Hora and Samhita are the three divisions of Jyotisha shatra. While Ganitha is the theoretical aspect, Hora and Samhita deal with predictions for the individual and society respectively. Samhita covers general predictions for all people like rainfall, crops, natural disasters, earthquakes etc. As such it is in the Hora and Samhita divisions that astrologers may differ from each other. It is here that the intellect and spark in the man that matters and leads to success or failure in the predictions. Interestingly there are certain conditions to be satisfied for a man to practice Astrology, which are generally flouted. An astrologer is supposed to be free from hatred, ever contented, knowledgeable and a man who follows austerity and does sacrifices regularly, based on scriptures.
There are as many as 18 Shastras or Siddhantas in Jyotisha Shastra out of which only five are available presently, namely 1.Surya Siddhanta, 2. Paitamaha Siddhanta, 3. Vasishta Siddhanta, 4. Paulisa Siddhanta and 5. Romaka Siddhanta, out of which Surya Siddhanta is the most popular. It deals with all the theoretical aspects of the planets and asterisms, lunar and solar eclipses, planetary conjunctions, the precise rising and setting of Sun, Moon and other heavenly bodies, different modes of reckoning time etc. Western authors have shown great interest in Indian Astronomy and there are several translations into English language from the original Sanskrit works.
It is interesting that the treatment of Ayurveda some times takes the help of Astrology to identify seemingly incurable and fatal diseases. |

SOME COURSE CORRECTIONS TO INDIA 'S SCIENTIFIC, ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENTS
Dr T.S.Ramakrishna
Founder and Secretary ESWARA |
 |
Science, economics and culture, though appear to be three very different subjects, are intertwined, with each having an imprint and impact on the other two in our lives. Science and economics dramatically alter the culture and lifestyle of a people. Since Independence we have been on a path of development largely based on the Western Model. Although we have tasted a lot of benefits by this type of development, formidable problems are cropping up. Of course the stakes on our development programs are too high to make any drastic changes like blasting the Agni Missile or the rocket carrying Insat 4C . But it appears possible and necessary to make some course corrections, for the survival of two of the most important things for the society, the human environment and the human values.
Once upon a time India was scientifically, economically and culturally a super power. But today, sadly, we are called a ‘developing country', desperately trying to catch up with the developed world at enormous cost. Science, which simply means knowledge is today defined as knowledge ascertained by observation and experiment, critically tested, systematized and brought under general principles. Anything that does not fit into this description, as of now, is condemned as superstition. Following this concept, we have created dozens of research institutes and laboratories in science, industry, medicine, agriculture, defense etc with a great success. To day we are proud of our scientists produced in thousands in a variety of fields with some of them considered world class. Due to consequent thought slavery of pursuing an imported science, we have been using all our energies and resources to prove Mr. White right! We have accepted whenever and whatever he said with out so much of a murmur. If he now says that construction of dams on a river is a bad proposition or organic farming is better than chemical farming or genetically modified (GM) foods are bad or there are only eight planets in the solar system, we have no objection because following his footsteps, we obtained degrees, accolades and awards. Irrespective of the outputs and their utility, we have come to believe that sophistication, high technology, procurement of expensive equipment, huge projects costing enormous amounts, high profile collaborative research with developed countries are indicators of scientific excellence.
Dazed by this modern science, we have dropped the amazing wealth of Ancient Indian Sciences which are time tested, final, clear, native, cheap, eco friendly, service oriented and promoters of a unified society. With an avowed respect and protection for Nature, Ancient India's science was of a different kind. Even the scientists were quite different. They were none other than the sages who lived for the society and renounced everything except knowledge. Consciousness was their knowledge base and mind was their laboratory. With extraordinary sensory perception, far superior to any sophisticated sensors of today, they saw the past, present and future. And they used their knowledge only for the good of the society
Most people do not know that the Ancient Indian Sciences have dealt with almost every branch of science including agriculture, artificial intelligence, astrology, astronomy, consciousness, earthquakes, ecology, mathematics, medicine, metallurgy, solar energy, space technology etc. But while it is impossible to imagine our lives with out modern science now, a collaborative research may lead to a sobering effect on the scientists as well as society, with the prospect of an extended life on this planet.
India 's wealth was estimated at 22% of the total wealth of the world in the year 1700 as against 2% now. But due to foreign invasions and rule capped by the industrial revolution, our science, economy as well as culture have been seriously damaged. Not only India but every individual and every country in the world is bitten by the ‘development bug' and is stretching beyond the limits of endurance. But it has to remembered that as the developing countries desperately try to catch up with the developed countries, the latter also will surge forward leaving us behind still a developing country.
Meanwhile the concept of materialism is going deeper in to the psyche of every one resulting in a steady degradation of human values. There is large scale discontent in the society, which is completely stratified, with each stratum trying to corner as much benefits as possible at the cost of other. Each stratum is oblivious to the pain and suffering of the others. Inequalities grew with each year and each Five Year plan. Greed of one and jealousy of the other have brought into fore frustration, intolerance and hatred. While the weak and God fearing people suffered silently, physically stronger ones and desperados revolted in the form of musclemen, naxalites and terrorists. Once they are accustomed to easy money through wrong means, they got stuck to it. Political support for such people only strengthened their activities.
Interestingly, when we look back, we see that we fail every system and blame the system and go for a new system and the process continues. The taste of easy money is like the taste of blood. We have heard of sharks and cannibals. We also find that in spite of poverty the poor people in India tried to live happily. Now we give them sleepless nights by propagating crass materialism. Of course today even the rich are unhappy amidst riches because they are not richer. Let us realize that the country and its resources are not meant for one or two generations. We cannot go on vandalizing the Mother Earth as if there is no tomorrow, as if there is no body to live after we depart.
Culture in its true meaning is a way of life which is not natural but cultivated through practice by the people of a land based on their ancestry, history, geography and above all faith. But with every country trying to become a developed one, a sort of knowledge based uniculture is developing. Interestingly when one reaches the limits of knowledge, he necessarily falls back on faith. Love and affection, care and concern are evaporating even among kith and kin in this uniculture. Taking the lead in this respect is the urbanites who are the role models for the underprivileged rural and tribal folk. Thus we are making a mockery of the art and science of peaceful living.
There is something strikingly similar in modern science, modern economics and modern culture all of which are driven by the craze for instant results, instant relief, instant fame, instant money at the cost of long term perils. If we do not apply some course corrections to our science, economy and culture, the worst of India will swallow the best of India before of our dreams of Vision 2020 are fulfilled. Let us give up the Western Model and develop ourselves keeping in mind our billion plus population, resources and invaluable heritage.Let us take advantage of our ancient wisdom and combine the best of both worlds to follow a path of progress with peace! |

Scientific Literature from Ancient Indian Scriptures - A study by I-SERVE
Sri Kuppa Venkata Krishna Murthy
Abstract |
 |
| The presence of scientific knowledge in the Vedic and Post Vedic Ancient Indian literature is amply proved by the quotations which are extensively available in the commentaries on the great works like Ramayana, Mahabharata, Pancha Kavyas etc. A List of these quotations is prepared and analyzed to determine the various branches of science available in ancient India . It is amazing that Ancient Indian Sciences have dealt with every subject under the Sun - agriculture, including natural fertilizers, plant and animal sciences (the later covering leather technology), mathematics, astronomy, cosmology, medicine including surgery, physics, chemistry and engineering including architecture as well as aeronautics, besides several others. The results of this scientific literature survey till date are summarized here, based on the numerous works cited. The classification of various branches of science in those days was not the same as today but more application oriented as can be seen from the table below. |

Lecture 27
Consultant Naturopath & Acupuncturist,
Medicit Hospitals, Hyderabad.
Dr. S.N.Murthy
Abstract |
 |
Man has always tried to maintain ‘good health' employing various means as with out good health, life is as good as ruined. To day several kinds of therapies are available in the world. But the choice of therapy is made by a patient, based on the availability of medicare, degree of urgency of relief required, cost, complexity and consequences of the treatment etc.
Ancient civilizations like India , China and Greece always believed that one can maintain health ‘naturally' with out the aid of any medicines, which is other wise called Nature Cure. This is based on the fact that t he body has the ability to heal itself from disease, which is actually an anomalous situation, created by the blockage of the flow of vital energy. Nature Cure in principle is akin to “Swastha Vrittam”, which is a part of Ayurveda. Indian Nature Cure believes that as the body is made up of panchabhootas , namely earth, water, fire, air and ether, restoring a sick man to normal health requires only these panchabhootas and nothing else.
Nature Cure essentially comprises of i) regulated diet ii) various exercises, asanas and mudras (postures) prescribed in Yoga Sastra and iii) discrete application of the five basic elements of Nature (the Panch Bhootas) to the body in the form of Pranayama, Hydrotherapy, Mud therapy, Sun therapy etc.
In addition, Nature Cure also includes some of the ancient Chinese concepts like acupuncture and acupressure which apply suitable pressure to an affected organ. Dr. William Fitzgerald, an American ENT surgeon found in 1913 that the pressure on specific parts of the body could have an anaesthetizing effect on a related area. Thus he divided the body into ten pressure related vertical zones, ending in the fingers and toes. He concluded that pressure on one part of a zone could affect organs of the body within that zone. In the 1930's, Eunice Ingham, a therapist, refined this zone therapy into what is called foot reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot reflects a similar condition in a corresponding part of the body. By working on these points the reflexologist can release blockages and accumulation of toxins and restore the free flow of energy to the whole body.
The reflexologist studies and analyzes the structure and condition of the feet and hands and locates areas of sensitivity and problematic organs. He then applies suitable pressure and stimulates the body thereby strengthening the defense mechanism of the body, speeds up the expulsion of toxins and establishes the normal flow of energy. The healing process is thus very gentle and takes place over a period of time, although relief is noticed in most cases instantaneously.
Reflexology, which is not be confused with massage, is a drug-free way of getting rid of diseases and maintaining good health. It works with an amazing efficiency and can be practiced by any body to reduce tension and congestion and relieve pain of ones own as well as others. By stimulating the reflexes of the human body in a systematic manner, many health problems are solved naturally and with ease. This technique has no damaging side effects.
The present author has found excellent results on application of gentle pressure on the acupuncture median points with a couple of tooth picks or used ball point pens instead of needles. In most cases the pressure has to be applied for about a minute on each point, with the total time not exceeding 30 minutes for each sitting. This simple therapy is found to strengthen body's own intrinsic healing capacity and respond well even in curing diseases accruing over long periods of abuse of the body. Depending on the intensity of disease and response of the body, a few ‘sittings' may completely cure the disease. |

A Recap Of ESWARA's 25 Lectures And The Urgent Need To Promote
Research In Native Sciences Of Our Country
Dr T.S.Ramakrishna

Since the beginning of the creation Man has always been trying to find ways and means of living comfortably and happily. Until a few centuries ago he was doing so with an acute sense of humility and an enormous respect for the Nature around him, on which his very life rested. But with the industrial revolution all concepts and human values have changed so shockingly that to day it is all together a different world. The bug of ‘development', the most abused word of present day, has caught in its vicious grip, individuals as well as countries forcing them to stretch themselves beyond their needs and means, to catch up with the so called developed countries. It is common knowledge that India with over a billion population has to develop its own brand of science and technology based on its socio-economic and cultural needs and resources and not necessarily ape the developed countries in all respects. Blind following of the so called development has been responsible for the irreparable damage caused to two of the most sensitive parameters on which the survival of the country is dependent: one is the human environment and the other is the human values.
Science and Technology always have a profound effect on the society and they invariably change the lifestyle, culture and values of the people. Inventions made by science are converted into various products by technology and brought to the people. Out of these products while some are essential others are comforts and luxuries, most of which are harmful to the man as well as his environment. We tacitly admit that the toxic effects of materialism borne out of the present day science and technology are eating away the vitals of the society.
Modern science accepts only such phenomenon that can be proved or reproduced in the laboratory as science and anything beyond that is superstition. But surprisingly as advances in instrumentation enable the determination of finer and finer details, incredible things are becoming credible. Science is much more than carpentry or black smithy and can not be contained in laboratory measurements. True science leads to philosophy which in turn leads to spirituality. With out a spiritual bend of mind science cannot be understood fully. Consciousness has already come to be realized as an important dimension in science. Just as the electromagnetic spectrum can not be seen by human eye except for the visible band, there could an invisible science beyond our comprehension and measurability.
It may do some good to remind ourselves that Ancient India had an amazing wealth of science of a different kind in the form of Vedas. Even the scientists were quite different. They were none other than sages who lived for the society and renounced everything except knowledge. Their consciousness was their knowledge base and their mind was their laboratory. With extraordinary sensory perception, far superior to any sophisticated sensors of today, they saw the past, present and future.
The following table shows the holistic and superior nature of the ancient sciences.

The ancient Indian science promoted a unified society. Irrespective of the stature, every individual or every living organism was an important and respectable component in the society. Everyone understood, respected and obeyed the Nature and its ‘natural' processes. It ran for millennia with out much problem, backed by the sacred concept of ‘harmony'. None felt too low or too high and performed his duties willingly and faithfully. Certainly there was more peace, contentment, happiness and security in the society.
It is for this sacred reason that we my look in to the amazing wealth of the Ancient Indian Science as can seen from the following table. |

These lectures are enough of evidence to prove that the ancient Indian sciences have dealt with almost every branch of science including agriculture, artificial intelligence, astrology, astronomy, consciousness, earthquakes, ecology, mathematics, medicine, metallurgy, solar energy, space technology etc. No doubt due, to neglect and lack of continuity, these sciences are in such a state that it is difficult to understand or appreciate their value. But the fact that ESWARA could conduct as many as 25 lectures during the last five years, shows their tremendous potential as well as relevance and the urgent need to initiate serious research in these sciences by national laboratories, universities etc.
A healthy respect for the Ancient India Sciences will certainly sober down the modern scientist, enhance respect for ‘minimum technology', save the environment and save valuable resources, all of which are essential for a ‘developing' country like ours. It is necessary for the Indian scientist to get over the thought slavery. Not because of any patriotic reasons or religious affinities but for the safety and well being of the children and grandchildren.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE and PANINI'S GRAMMAR
C.S.R.Prabhu
Abstract |
 |
Panini, the ancient grammarian of Sanskrit language produced a system of generative grammar around 7 th Century B.C. near Takshashila (the modern Baluchistan). A monumental masterpiece, Panini's Grammar known as Astadhyayi , is profusely praised by Western and Eastern Scholars as Summum Bonum of human intellectual achievement, ever done in the world. In a system of Sanskrit texts the whole of Sanskrit language has been formally encapsulated based on “generative” process of producing all the possible words in all their conjugate forms of classical Sanskrit language, with extension of Vedic Sanskrit language. This system of 5 texts comprise of Astadhyayi (rules of generative grammar), Dhathupathamu (roots of verbs), Ganapathamu (list of groups), Lingaanusasana (Masculine and Feminine Genders) and Unadikosa (stem - beginning and end of a word).
The modern Artificial Intelligence, a branch of computer science research deals with subjects related to Knowledge Representation and Natural Language Processing. The natural languages such as English, Telugu or Hindi are not formal in their grammar and structure and therefore ambiguous and context sensitive. This makes it very difficult for them to be processed in a machine i.e., a computer system. Rigid structure and grammar that makes possible formalism are the essential requirements for processing the natural language on a computer system, to overcome at least partly, the problems of context sensitivity and ambiguity.
Sanskrit language, as the name indicates, is not a common language or Prakrut. It is refined, processed and formalized through grammar and therefore called Sanskrit which means literally “processed”, “refined” or “formalized”. Panini's Grammar offers an almost formal, highly comprehensive generative grammar for Sanskrit language, thereby making it amenable for machine processing by a computer system.
In this lecture, the unique and extraordinary characteristics of Panini's Grammar of Sanskrit are brought out. The generative processes of character string transformations by rigid rules, which finally give rise to various conjugate forms of nouns and verbs in Sanskrit language, starting from the roots and basic suffixes – are all clearly explained from the fundamental sounds and characters. How these processes of Siddhi or production of conjugate forms of words from their roots can be computerized using modern programming language are also explained. A patented technique of converting the Sutra or a Rule of Panini's Grammar into a program or procedure in a modern programming language like “C”, is also explained.
By implementing the computerized Algorithms equivalent to Panini's Sutras or Rules in a computer system, it is possible to produce the Object Oriented Knowledge Representation in “Frames” used in Artificial Intelligence. Once the knowledge is extracted from sentence, it can be represented in a frame in an object attribute structure, which can later be utilized for a variety of purposes such as machine translation. |

THE SCIENCE OF THE SOUL AND THE EVOLUTION OF PERSONALITY
Nanduri Sai Prasad
Abstract |
 |
We all believe that present man evolved from the Ape, based on the evolutionary theory of Darwin . At the same time, we also observe different personalities, or individuals, though living in the same environment and society, did not evolve to the same degree. We see, one is wicked and does not hesitate to cheat, or even kill, another for a gain, while another person is magnanimous and showers love even on the enemy. One is strikingly rich while the other is a beggar through out his life. This behavioral variation and duality in Nature is one of the age old paradoxes that could not be resolved by the social scientists. Ancient Indian sciences and philosophy have answers to all these riddles in the form differently evolved Souls that dictate the personality of a man.
Human beings can be broadly divided into two categories: the evolving and the evolved. The five-sensory personality always seeks external power to control the environment and the people within the zone of his influence. Money and power have become the symbols of this external superiority. There is another type of person, the intellectual personality, who can feel the intense internal power, which is nothing but energy of his Soul. He is full of love and wisdom which he shares with others. For example, Jesus and Mahatma Gandhi prayed for mercy for those who inflicted injuries on them, representing evolved Souls.
Only with a physical body and a personality, one can feel anger, fear, hatred, vengeance, sorrow, shame, regret, indifference, cynicism and loneliness, but not the Soul. Love, compassion and wisdom do not belong to the personality. They are experiences of the Soul. The five-sensory personality has to evolve into an intellectual personality. This may not happen during one lifespan and might take number of incarnations depending on when he gets the awareness. Each personality, consciously or unconsciously, contributes to the evolution of its Soul through different incarnations. During each incarnation, the Soul creates a different personality and acquires a suitable physical body.
At the beginning of creation, all human beings are full of consciousness and energy. Man is blessed with five senses and intellect, and is the ultimate in creation. Because of free will, sin and virtue are dawn on humanity creating different personalities. Only an intellectual person is aware that his personality and its body are temporary aspects of the Soul. When they served their function, at the end of one's life, the Soul releases them. The physical body dies out, but the eternal Soul incarnates another body. At the end of many such incarnations, after balancing its negative and positive energies, it returns to its natural state of full energy.
The energy balancing act goes on according to the Law of Karma, analogous to the Third Law of Motion of Newton. There will be a reaction for every action. For example, a person gains wealth by deceiving another person. This creates a loss of energy, and this imbalance of energy can be balanced only when another person exploits him for gain of wealth. Similarly, if one inflicts pain to another person, the loss of energy can be balanced only when the person experiences similar pain he inflicted. This energy balancing goes on through several incarnations, with ups and downs. When the five-sensory personality becomes aware of the purpose of his life and the nature of his Soul through its journey, it will be in a position to clearly understand different events of its life and relate them to the energy dynamics of the Soul. When this Soul attains its full energy there will be no more incarnations. |

HERBOPRINT TM -
A UNIQUE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL FOR STANDARDIZATION AND
VALIDATION OF TRADITIONAL INDIAN MEDICINES
Dr. D.VIJAYA KUMAR
Indian Institute Of Chemical Technology (CSIR)
Hyderabad |
 |
| Abstract |
|
| Most of the Indian Systems of medicine are based the traditional concepts of disease identification and their relation to the physico-chemical properties of medicines, which are prepared with highest standards of quality control and ethics. Handed down through centuries of study and practice, except some, the present day practioners are fully non-conversant of the philosophical principles behind these therapies. It is felt that the scientific basis and the rationality of these systems are difficult to be equated or explained in terms of modern terminology and scientific parameters. This emphasizes the need of a tool that can translate the traditional terminology and properties to be explains in modern physico chemical properties.
There is a need for standardization and quality control of the preparation of various herbal, mineral or herbo-mineral products so that their traditional efficiency is maintained. As the principles and properties of the medicines mentioned in the traditional texts will be considered as standard, the modern methods of quality control should also take them in to consideration while assessing the quality of the traditional medicines with out deviating from the basic philosophy. Hence standardization of traditional medicines prepared by traditional methods and protocols and their standardization by modern methods with out any role of traditional properties and terminology, which is in practice now cannot be considered authentic as two different protocols cannot be used for the same purpose.
A modern instrumental method entitled HERBOPRINT TM using a chromatographic technique has been developed for the standardization of the above purpose. This helps to standardize the medicines based on the traditional principles and properties as mentioned in the traditional texts using modern scientific tools and terminology. When these medicines are analyzed using the method of chromatographic fingerprinting, the generalization developed has helped in understanding the inherent science built in the basic concepts of Ayurveda, Siddha and other traditional Indian medicines.
This unique tool is also able to correlate the pathological conditions of biological samples like blood to diagnose the disease holistically following the traditional parameters. The technique not only facilitates the assessment of the disease status and selection of proper medicine to cure the ailment but also provides a method for quality control of traditional medicines and put the traditional philosophies on modern scientific footing, for the benefit of mankind.

CONSCIOUSNESS-- THE NEW DIMENSION IN SCIENCE
A.G.B.Reddi
Retd. Dy. Director General,
Geological Survey of India , Bangalore
|
 |
| Abstract |
|
Relativity and Quantum Physics ushered in an era of a new mode of knowledge. The earlier age of experimentation and verification of results by the senses has now given place to intuitive knowledge through esoteric mathematics. This is bringing the scientist closer to truths behind apparent phenomena. As a result, he now seems to be marching towards the Vedantic sage who has already preceded him in his long quest for the ultimate Truth. The material benefits of quantum mechanics in various fields such as solid state matter, metals, magnetism, electrical conductivity and so on have been immense. But the impact of quantum and particle physics on our psychological life promises to be even more powerful and profound. Quantum physics demonstrates that matter is conscious, that a unitive consciousness is the foundation of all phenomena and that our subjective consciousness determines our perception of external reality. At the same time particle physics asserts that there is no such thing as individuality isolated from the rest of the universe, that there is only an overwhelming interconnectedness of all phenomena, events and entities founded on a fundamental unity at a deeper level. All these are of course not new to Vedanta but yet they do deserve to be acclaimed as rediscoveries quite original in their own right because modern science has laid a sound rational foundation for these ancient truths. It is entirely a subjective world of external reality as propounded by quantum mechanics. However, if this subjectivity promotes division rather than healthy diversity, it will come into conflict with oneness. In this sense quantum mechanics on the one hand and particle physics on the other may present an antinomy - an antinomy that can only be harmonised through a purification of mind, intellect and heart.
Physics and Biology are converging on the common ground of consciousness, which seems to be the real driving principle behind all life processes. Biologists are now looking at cells, tissues, organs and in fact whole organisms not merely in their biological identity but also as distinct energy fields. This is to be regarded as a great leap in the right direction as these fields are subtler than matter and ought therefore be nearer to the truth. Although like Vedanta, the New Physics has also arrived at consciousness as the substratum of the phenomenal world, there seems to be a certain lack of clarity in its perception of this principle. It seems to view consciousness as an undifferentiated wholeness, which is not quite the case. Science is as yet a long way from realising that consciousness actually consists of an entire hierarchy of 'planes and levels' in an ascending scale between gross matter at the base and pure Spirit at the summit. These planes and levels in fact correspond to other worlds of matter-- matter subtler than our own--each of these worlds peopled by its own beings. These kingdoms of subtle matter evidently surpass our 'understanding' and can only be experienced. Is the Scientist then ready for this great adventure? In any case, it is decidedly a momentous turning point for science which will be called upon to turn more and more 'other- worldly'. It should be a safe bet that science will never be the same again! |

CARE OF THE UNBORN CHILD WITH YOGA IN THE PRESENT AGE – THEORY, PRACTICE & APPLICATION
Dr. Shamathakamani Narendran
Principal and Dean,

| Abstract |
Pregnancy is one of the greatest events in a woman's life. The artistry, the amazing accuracy and the awesome detail associated with the little life inside the womb can only be experienced by a mother. With the concept of small families all over the world, pregnancy has become not only very precious but also full of apprehension and fear.
With latest advances in obstetric field today one can plan to become pregnant when needed and take good care to have a normal child. In addition, the growth of the foetus right from conception to delivery can be mapped and visualized in such detail that one can know the sex of the baby and the development of its organs etc. during the period of pregnancy, giving great relief to the mother as well as the near and dear. But it is also true that the development of the baby is affected by several maternal as well as foetal factors. Hypertension, diabetes, malnutrition, chronic renal disease etc. can cause harmful effects on the foetus. Similarly chromosomal anomalies in the embryo and infections in the mother are known to cause several birth defects. Apart from these causes, tension, fear, anxiety and chronic stress in the mother can cause serious problems, resulting often in a poor outcome. It is now well recognised that stress causes psycho-neuro-immunological changes in the body leading to pregnancy complications ending in operative surgery. Hypersensitivity of the mother leads to intolerance to pain, requiring heavy dosage of painkillers, which are not safe for the unborn.
Yoga therapy is fast advancing as an effective tool in many physical and psychological disorders. There is enough proof available of the beneficial effects of yoga on the mind and body of the human beings. Many scientists have investigated the changes that take place in the human system at all levels by the practice of yoga and holistic living in the recent past all over the world. Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (sVYASA), Bangalore , has evolved a simple and useful module of basic yoga practice for mothers-to-be and extensive research is going on in one of the local super speciality referral maternity hospitals.
However due to a lack of right exposure, there is still a lot of apprehension and fear in the minds of doctors and obstetricians, much more than the pregnant women themselves about yoga practice. It has to be mentioned here that yoga does not mean only some asanas or postures. Yogic practice or any type of ancient Indian health management always takes a holistic view of the human being in its totality. Unfortunately the overwhelming influence of western medicine on modern Indian women is such that they need counselling, coaxing and motivating to understand the easily and safely obtainable benefits from yoga. Yoga therapy has been tried in all most all the stress related conditions with remarkable benefits (Shamanthakamani, 2005a; Shamanthakamani 2005b).
The book on “Yoga for Pregnancy” (Shamanthakamani et al, 2004) comprehensively deals with medical facts about pregnancy, effects of stress on pregnancy, information about anatomical, physiological changes and adaptations to pregnancy and also complications that can arise such as Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH), Intra Uterine Growth Retardation (IUGR), Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), etc. It gives a complete knowledge of modified set of yoga practices including Asanas, Pranayama, Meditation Techniques, Relaxation Techniques, Mudras and Bandas as well as the dietary practices that can be practiced throughout pregnancy.
In conclusion it can be said with confidence that Yoga practices are safe, effective and beneficial and also help in easy delivery. People who are practicing modern medicine can undoubtedly provide a better quality healthcare to their patients by combining the ancient Indian practices with high-tech medicare.

THE PERILS OF SOLAR ENERGY EXPLOITATION
Prof. K.C.Sahu (Retd)
Indian Institute of Technology,
Powai, Mubai |
 |
| Abstract |
|
The projected shortage non-renewable energy sources have prompted the scientific world to look for alternative sources. The most favoured among the non-conventional energies is the solar energy, which is endlessly received in immense quantities - more than 10,000 times the energy that humans currently use. Even a simple roof top solar installation on a 800 sq. ft. terrace would supply enough power to meet all normal domestic requirements of electricity in a modern Indian home. There are two techniques available to exploit Solar energy, which are i) the Solar Thermal (ST), which is the direct use of Solar heat and ii)the Solar Photo-Voltaic (SPV). While the former is time specific, the latter is apparently more advantageous. But the manufacture of PV-cells requires a number of hazardous materials including many chemicals and heavy metals besides the basic element Silicon, which poses a threat in different dimension that has never been hitherto focused.
Silicon, a Group IV element in the Periodic Table, is a semimetal that lies on the border of the metal-nonmetal boundary. Its toxicity (metabolic impact on the organic kingdom) is least known, unlike germanium, selenium and aluminum, the last of which is suspected to cause brain damage in human beings, which is known as Alzheimer's disease. The pollution index of a metal increases with its technophyllitic index, which is defined by the ratio of annual global production of a metal and its Clark value in the crust. Pollution index is defined by the amount of metal present in the environment (air, water, and soil) over and above the background values and this index naturally increases with increase of utility of the metal by the society.
Production of elemental silicon is chemical intensive, some 500 to 1000 chemicals are used for imprinting electronic circuits on silicon wafers. Production of a six inches silicon wafer results in 14 kg. of solid waste and 11,000 litres of waste water. Extensive use of silicon in most human activities is clearly envisaged in future. In all aspects, future human species will be virtually surrounded and soaked in silicon wafer to collect and process solar energy received in every possible occasion. That means an increased pollution index of hitherto unavailable elemental silicon. The unlimited stock of solar energy, abundance of silica on earth and ever-growing ceaseless demand of energy will compound exploitation and abuse.
Silicon, the dominant constituent in the lithosphere, was destined to trigger and evolve into a life system (Crains-Smith hypothesis). But carbon, although a minor constituent in the Crust and manifested in a variety of states (solid, liquid and gas as well as in a large number of organic polymers), reigned supreme, relegating silicon to the background in the developing units of life on the early earth. The anthropogenic rejuvenation of elemental silicon for tapping of solar energy and its introduction into the organic world that has never occurred in the history of this planet will be like bringing onto the stage the defeated competitor of carbon and only time will decide the consequence of such an invitation. As such, silicification of wood and organism in fossils clearly reveal the replacement zeal of silicon in the organic world. There have been spots of silicification in localized organs, such as development of silicosis in lungs, hardening of veins and bones where the impact is total destruction of the carbonaceous living tissues, albeit on micro scale. Cosmetic use of silicon in certain body parts has been found disastrous. It is too early to speculate on the impact of silicon entry into the organic world since no toxicity studies have yet been done for the element. However, its chemical similarity with Germanium, Selenium etc shows that silicon is potentially toxic and needs to be handled carefully. Some silicon compounds are also used as a rodenticide. If Selenium toxicity is a cause of dinosaurs' extinction, Jurassic Park is a chime of our death knell due to environmental silicon toxicity.
The technology of tapping solar energy therefore is in no way different from the introduction of atomic energy. The search for a clean source of energy for the future world should not end by inducting an element of societal disaster that goes against the spirit of the effort to increase the quality of life |

| Abstract |
The Vedas are Divine revelations and were not composed or authored by mortal human beings and are Apaurusheya. The Vedas are eternal. However, it can be said that the wisdom and content of the Vedas are the Divine revelations to the ancient Rishis who must have lived at a finite period in the past and perhaps their period could be dated using numerous astronomical events mentioned in these epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, Itihasas and dating of them paves the way for dating the Vedas .
According to Dr. S. Kalyanaraman, there are over 72 astronomical references in Mahabharata . These astronomical events are verifiable with aid of computer simulations of the sky maps using the planetarium software. The simulated sky maps display the configuration of planets, stars and constellations at any place in the world on any particular day from 4,712 B.C. to 10,000 A.D.
The pioneering work in establishing the dates of events in the Mahabharata Itihasa was done by Dr. B. N. Narahari Achar using the modern planetarium software. Professor K .S. Raghvan has considered many of astronomical events as recorded by Veda Vyasa in his calculations using the Vedanga Jotishya Shastra and proposed the dates of the Mahabharata events. Accordingly, the Mahabharata war started on November 22, 3067 B.C. Dr. Achar says the planetarium software simulations shows a remarkable agreement of planetary configurations as described by Veda Vyasa on this day. Similarly, it was determined that the winter solstice occurred on January 13, 3066 B.C. and Bhishma passed away on January 17, 3066 B.C. The Mahabharata episodes occurred around 3000 B.C. or 5000 years ago. Winter solstice from the Mahabharata time has shifted from the month of Magaha to Margashirsha with a change of 69 days to the present. For a change of a day in the winter solstice 71.8 years are required. Therefore, 5,000 (69 x 71.8) years have lapsed since the Mahabharata episode. Similar calculations in respect of Ramayana face many problems due to various complexities.
Lokamayna Bala Gangadhar Tilak in his famous and celebrated book “The Artic Home in the Vedas ” says that the vernal equinox was in the constellation Orion or Mrig a during the period of early Vedic hymns, about 4,000 B.C. and receded to the constellation Krittikas , or Pleiades about 2,500 B.C. In conclusion, according to Bala Gangdhar Tilak , at the time of the Vedic hymns, vernal equinox was in the constellation Mriga or Orion, hence the winter solstice was in the constellation Meenam or Pisces
The earth's axis, which is inclined approximately 23 degrees to the plane of revolution, rotates approximately in a circle once in 46,000 years. This phenomenon is called “The Milankovich Cycle of Earth's Precession.” In this duration of 46,000 years, the sighting of a particular constellation takes place in different seasons. Presently, that is 2004 A.D., the winter solstice occurs in the constellation Orion. At the time of the Vedic hymns the winter solstice was in the constellation Pisces indicating that the earth's axis has rotated by a quarter of a circle, or 90 degrees, corresponding to 11,500 years before present or 9,500 B.C. Again, the Mahabharata took place during a period when the winter solstice was in the constellation Prajapati or Taurus, which is 30 degrees deviation from Mriga or Orion. The Mahbharata war took place 5,000 years ago with a change in position by a deviation of 30 degrees; therefore 90 degrees deviation from the constellation Pisces, indicate that the Vedic hymns are 15,000 years old or the Vedic age to be 13,000 B.C. However, the general consensus among Indian scholars is to consider the Harappa -Mohenjodaro culture, which dates back to 4,000 B.C., to be a later phase of the Vedic culture. This might very well place the age the Rgved a as early as 10,000 B.C.
But in the final analysis it has to be admitted that the Veda s offer amazing wealth of both scientific as well as spiritual wisdom for the proper development of human life and the time period of their revelations to the early Vedic Rishis is of no consequence. |
